Anyone else feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up with trends? It’s a full-time job to find the right products, learn how to use them and then make sure all your Insta followers know you’re totally in touch. Well my fellow hermits, you’re in luck — I’m going to tell you the five trends that you don’t need to waste your time with. These trends are taking their place in the archives and we are leaving them behind in 2020.

Now friends, I want to preface this list with a disclaimer, everyone has their own style. This is just a fun list of trends I feel can be left behind, but you do you!

  1. Over-lining lips
    • Sorry Kylie Jenner, but the over-lined, matte lip is dying with 2020. This year, it’s all about plump lips with a balmy, glossy, natural look. Clear gloss is an easy (and cheap) way to get in on this trend. The matte lip craze turned all of our lips into the Sahara so quickly – I for one am excited about this pivot in lip care. Hopefully we can show off our lips, sans mask, in the future!
  1. Defined brows
    • Middle school me is wishing I would have known about this a lot sooner… we are all about the natural brow now! Instead of tweezing them to nothingness and using a pencil to draw them back on, beautiful, natural brows are stepping into the spotlight! Full, feathery brows are in this year. So set the tweezers down, let those babies grow out, and try a brow gel to comb your brows into place. This Anastasia brow wax is quickly gaining a cult following!
  1. Contour and heavy face makeup
    • Have you heard of “Skinimalism”? The term was made popular by Pinterest and is here to stay. People are wearing less makeup than ever before and instead opting for natural beauty and skin health. So take that Ulta Beauty budget and use it on skin care instead of foundation. You’ll be glowing and it’ll just be your skin – no powder necessary! If you’re really looking to overachieve, you can even take up Facial Yoga! (Even more ways to incorporate yoga into your life!)

Not to beat a dead horse, but I had to at least mention these last two:

  1. Skin-tight clothing
    • And yes, before you ask, that includes skinny jeans. I personally won’t be giving them up completely, because we all have an emotional support jegging that lives in our bottom drawer… just in case. This is another trend that Gen Z is pushing out, and I get it! We’re all about comfort and functionality in 2021. Try a mom jean, boyfriend cut, or even a flared jean for a more 2021 look.
  1. The Side Part
    • Gen Z is making it very clear… the middle part is in. This trend was famous on Tik Tok, and has the entire generation putting Millennials and Gen X on blast for their side parts. Is it harsh? Maybe. But, there is something to be said for the symmetry that a middle part gives you. Try it on for a day, style it up nice, and see if you feel the energy that a middle part inflicts. But hey, if you hate it, we won’t tell the Gen Z-ers.

What trends are you ready to leave behind in 2020, and what are you most interested in for 2021. We’d love to know! Sound off in the comments!
